By 2014 China expects to have the worlds largest high speed rail network, spanning 19,000 km of track and will connect 200 million people. But China is not the only country planning to connect significant numbers of people with high speed trains, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia plan to develop the rail networks that will connect a total of 67 million people. India, not to be outdone by China massive rail development, plans to develop a 2000 km network that will cost US$44.5 billion by 2020
Alex Chang, COO, Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation, thinks that the requirement market of the high-speed rail transit has become higher and higher.
“Maybe such a requirement may encourage more technical development, more resources put on the speed rail transit research and development. For example, now mainland China is based on the Japanese and German technology, now they have their own transit technology. So I think maybe some countries may follow Chinese practice trying to develop their own high-speed rail technologies. Until now, the major manufacturer of high-speed rail is only Japan, France, Germany and Spain and maybe later on some will follow and will get into marketing high-speed rail technologies,” he said.
